All the World's a Stage - William Shakespeare

There is something magical about the theater.  The lights, beautiful stage design and props, the costumes all paint an enchanting background for the elegant dancing, and electric music.  I truly love it all.  I can’t tell you a time where I’ve gone to a performance and didn’t get goosebumps or a tear in my eye at some point.  It is an escape for the everyday where for a few hours you can get wrapped up in something whimsical and truly sensational.

I can’t remember my first live performance, but I can remember the first show that gave me the love.  I was fortunate enough to be a tag along on my aunt and uncle’s vacation to Europe when I was 14.  We spent some time in London and while we were there, we got to see the theatrical version of Beauty and the Beast.  Of course, the story and music were all very familiar from the Disney movie version, but seeing it live brought a whole new level of appreciation.  Since then, I haven’t been able to get enough.

A common theme with all moms is a desire for your children to have all the best things you had in your childhood, plus more.  We all hope that the things that we love, our children will love as well,  so we can share that bond and passion.  Of course, we don’t want little mini-me clones walking around and love to see their unique personalities shine through.  But, there is that wish of commonality as well.  This desire drove me to start Zoe in dance at a young age.  I want to relive those beautiful memories through her eyes.  So, what better first live performance than a ballet, to share with my sweet dancer.

We kicked off the Christmas weekend by getting all dolled up for the Next Generation Ballet’s performance of the Nutcracker.  (Let’s be honest, getting dressed up is one of the great perks of going to the theater.)

I knew that if I was going to keep my 4-year-old engaged, they would need to be good seats to I planned months in advance to make sure she could feel all the energy.  The plan worked.  Our seats were fantastic, and Zoe’s jaw stayed glued to the floor for the first half of the performance.
Of course, like any other preschooler, there is a short attention span. Intermission was peppered with requests of snacks, treats and toys.  Fortunately, when the second half began, that is when the fun really started.  Zoe loved all the colorful costumes and was amazed by the scene with the dancing cheetahs.  (They just so happen to be her favorite animal so that didn’t hurt.)
You might be wondering, did I instill the same passion for theater and dance in Zoe that I have?  Will this young girl remember her first ballet?  Only time will tell.  But no matter what the future holds for our mother/daughter bonding and shared interest, for now, I can say it is nothing but magical.

Digital Detox

Our digital life and our real life have become more blurred than ever.  If you have watched the Social Dilemma, there is good chance you have thought about your interactions with social media.  Our world of 24 hour news cycles along with social platform’s curated content based on sophisticated algorithms can heighten anxiety, paranoia, stress and anger among other feelings.  At the same time, it is a great way to stay connected with family and friends.  Being so connected in the digital world can result in a disconnection from the real world.  If you were honest with yourself, how many hours have you spent wasted mindlessly scrolling?  I know for me; it was a lot.  It was becoming an addiction that I didn’t know I had.  The pandemic heightened it.  The amount that I pick up my phone to look to see if I had an unread email or missed text message is almost as alarming as the FOMO I was developing if I didn’t see the latest posts from the...

The List (40 before 40)

In case you haven't noticed, I'm a list kind of person.  I keep hand written lists all over my office of things to accomplish for that day, week, month, even year.  We have project lists and grocery lists - so it is only fitting that I would have bucket lists.  I'm using lists plural because I have many everywhere in my house and on my computer.  When it comes to bucket lists, I had the one of the 30 things I want to do before I turned 30 along with a running one of the things I want to do before I die.  That one is forever evolving.  From that list, I narrowed down 40 things I think I could accomplish before my 40th birthday.  However, there is a catch for anyone who is reading this right now.  Many of these items were probably inspired by you.  Or you might see something on this list that you also have on yours.  My ask to all of you is that we do this TOGETHER.  Let me know which of these things YOU want to accomplish ...

How do you measure a year?

Please excuse me for a moment before I write this as I breakout into song.  For your reading enjoyment, I would imagine the cast of Rent singing this, rather than me.  I will not be on America’s Got Talent anytime soon. Five hundred twenty-five thousand six hundred minutes Five hundred twenty-five thousand moments so dear Five hundred twenty-five thousand six hundred minutes How do you measure, measure a year? In daylights, in sunsets In midnights, in cups of coffee In inches, in miles In laughter, in strife In five hundred twenty-five thousand six hundred minutes How do you measure a year in the life As 2019 ends and 2020 begins, I thought about the goals I set in the last year for my 40 before 40 challenge and the one that I am most proud of, was my reading challenge.   Everyone is guilty at times of putting themselves last.   We wait until the end of the day to relax.   We feed others before we feed ourselves.   (Talking to all th...
